I spear fish when ever weather is permiting. Last time I went was only 2 weeks ago where we ventured out to a reef 2 hours off Bowen North Queensland. We speared a steap drop off that was approx 40 meters deep. I had dived down to take a shot at a coral trout aprox 6 meters down, it had gone back into its hole in the reef.
I started to surface when i noticed a large dark object in the deeper water only 20 meters from me. At first i was not to alarmed as white tip reef sharks a common out here and never give you a hard time unless you have a fish on the end of your spear, there after an easy feed of fresh fish. By the time i had surfaced the current had taken me away from the reef and i was now in deep water in more ways than one. The seemly harmless reef shark had come up from the deep and had circled me i vividly recall looking closer and feeling of horror whe i realised it was a 12 foot tiger shark and by its movements i was on the menue. I looked for the boat but it was a good 500 meters away. The only thing i had to rely on was the shark shield on my leg, but i had only borrowed it from a friend and did not trust it. The shark continued to circle me, i had to keep on swimming as i was drifting futher out to sea. i lost sight of the shak which terrified me as i can shoot it if i can see it, i dont like the idear of an ambush. sure enough it came for me from my right side. It was level with me with its dorsel fin out of the water. i was prepairing to shoot it hoping to fend it off, when it was f@!$ing close it veared off behind me the shark shield worked! the shark headed back down into the blue and i made it back to the boat. When i got in the boat i recall looking at a mate on board who was white, i was going an shere addrenalin. He informed that he thought i was a goner, he had watched the whole thing unfold. I still have not been back in the water as i will not untill i buy my own shark shield.

I would probably pick J Bay. But that is creepy out in the water with a beacon like object on your board.
