I tried this a few weeks ago in Nantucket. perfect conditions for learning, calm water and knee high beach break. I was a lot of fun, I have to admit. On the other hand, I surfed near Malibu recently and there were 4 or 5 paddle boarders in the line-up. Sucked! they catch the waves further out and also have less control when they're up b/c of the big heavy boards.

...just my thoughts.
