Yes, the UK does get surf and actually gets good surf (see link “Pipeland Comes to Scotland“). Now, one entrepreneur’s vision is to have a wave park on the Thames in London. Steve Jones is planning the The Venture Xtreme project at Silvertown Quays. Surfers will be able to ride 3-5 ft waves all year round by the Thames in a wave park. (Youtube video at end)

The wave park is planned for 2011 and offers 100 m long rides that can break either left or right. For $60/hour surfers would get the chance to ride up to 10 waves. [more after the jump]

“Surfers can expect to pay £30 for an hour’s session that will offer at least 10 waves per rider, each rolling more than 100 metres as the swell spreads from the dock to the wide beach. The wave machine can be set to make the surf break left and right from a central peak, allowing surfers to ride comfortably without fear of collision – a hazard which plagues the increasingly crowded breaks in Devon and Cornwall. Floodlit surfing and screens highlighting riders’ best moves aim to attract an estimated 100,000 surfers and body-boarders a year, as well as half a million spectators.

Last year the British Surfing Association estimated that almost half of the country’s 500,000 surfers were based outside the south-west where the most consistent waves are available, and 60,000 live in London.” [Guardian]

Artificial waves and wave parks are nothing new. Japan recently shut down the Ocean Dome, which was arguably the best wave park in the world, much to the dismay of surfers everywhere. This hurt us surfers especially hard because most of us found out after the wave park closed via a Transworld Surf article where they sent some pro’s to surf it and report back (Kalani Robb and Benji Weatherly among others). The report back was good, even epic; but the prognosis bad as the Ocean Dome was closing.

Us avid surf magazine readers have been tempted by building of the Ron Jon Surf Park in Orlando, FL. It seems that it’s always been just a year away from being completed since 2003 (apparently now it really is). This surf park is promised to be the world’s best (in spite of the claim’s of the London surf park).

Oddly enough, the Guardian article on the London wave park quotes a surfer who claims an artificial wave doesn’t replicate the surf experience. As if he’d prefer all those about to line up to pay to surf waves, come down to the beach instead and pack into the already crowded line-ups. While I agree in spirit with him, if I were in London, a surf park would come close enough to replicating the surf experience to make it worth every penny (or pence) I paid. And there would sure as shit be times I would hit the park up instead of making the three hour drive to Cornwall.

I’m completely in favor of these things. I would gladly pay $60 for 10 guaranteed good waves of 100 meters in one hour. There are those who decry the parks suggesting that they’ll just encourage more people to surf and further crowd the line-ups. But I think it’s the opposite, that there will always be traditionalist who treasure the pure experience of the ocean but more and more surfers will want the guarantees of waves and consistency of the surf parks. So bring them on! And as for London, damn you British surfers deserve at least that for what you endure to get decent waves.

Ocean Dome, we hardly knew ya!

I first read about Pavones in “Searching for Captain Zero.” Writer, Allan Weisbecker , makes a surf road trip to Costa Rica to find a lost childhood friend. He ended the trip at this epic wave described as the world’s second longest (behind Chicama, Peru). I made my first trip to Costa Rica last May and when a real swell hit, I packed up my rental car and motored 12 hours down the coast from the North to Pavones. The wave lived up to every description of it. Sure, it’s crowded, but that’s to be expected of any epic wave with land access. There will be drop-ins but for the most part everyone including the locals respect the line-up. It’s entirely possible to grab waves out at Pavones and probably grab some of the best waves of your life. Considering how close it is the U.S. and how cheap it is to get there, it’s definitely worth a trip to surf. The area of Southern Costa Rica surrounding Pavones is pristine and stunning. The locals are friendly and the small town at Pavones has a chill laid back vibe. Check out our guide to getting to and surfing Pavones below (more photos and video)

The wave at Pavones breaks on larger Southern swells from April through September. Though it’s considered one wave, it tends to section in the middle creating two epically long waves. The outer wave breaks across the river mouth and is generally larger than the inner wave. It’s generally fast with long walls and sections at times with a few short hollow sections. On the right swell the two points will connect for a ride over 2 km! The inner wave picks up at the corner and breaks through to the beach. Both rides are close to 200 yards long! The inner wave tends to be smaller and has absolutely perfect shape. It’s similar to a left handed longer version of Malibu.

Paddling out is relatively easy at the rivermouth. From there, you could paddle up to the first point or stay there for the second peak waves. I found it easier to catch waves on the first point because they were bigger and tended to section more spreading the line-up out. The best outer point waves would break all the way through the rivermouth although it was difficult to connect them through to the second peak. The second peak was very crowded and more challenging line-up, but waves here peel perfectly through to the inside (usually half the size of the waves on the outer point). The bigger and more consistent the swell, the better off you are for scoring waves. Pavones needs a big swell and the size spreads the line-up out more.

[youtube 4D9kQxV9EcY]

The wave is cobblestone bottom, winds were light in the morning with glassy conditions, but seemed to pick up mid-morning slightly sideshore that added some lump to the water. Surf was best just above low-tide.

Pavones is about a eight to ten hour drive from San Jose. It’s a long drive especially considering the last two hours is on dirt roads, better to break it up over two days. Locals can all point you in the right direction. I spent a night in Dominical on the way there , a village on the coast with an excellent beach break. Dominical or Playa Hermosa are great places to wait for the swell to build and surf excellent beach breaks. There are plenty of accommodations in Pavones and all seemed to be cheap and a short walk to the point. The locals are all friendly and happy to have business. There’s a few more waves a short drive up the coast, but you’ll want to surf Pavones when it’s on. It’s also possible to fly from San Jose to Golfito, the closest airport to Pavones. From there, you can arrange a rental car or taxi ($50 one way) for the remaining two + hour drive.

Here are a couple of short video clips I posted on Youtube from two boat trips I did to Indonesia. The first in 2005 to the island Panaitan in Western Java. Panaitan was where Timmy Turner’s movie “Second Thoughts” was filmed. The island has some epic waves and was a week long trip with a short motoring from port. The second clip is from a boat trip I did in May of 2006 to Northern Sumatra. It was a two week trip and we surfed epic spots throughout different islands. The spots are all considered “secret spots.” The surf up there was unreal although access is a little difficult requiring a long motoring to the breaks and a trip of at least two weeks.
